Book Covers

There was a summer fete in the church hall near us in London. It was a jolly affair with face painting for the kids and Pimms for the adults. As always I headed straight to book stall, forever looking for the lost gem. I struck gold with the cardboard box on the floor. On my hands and knees I fell into a time warp to my teens...
I prefer the older Le Carre covers...what about you?

The Pan covers of these DuMaurier title were rather buxom...but fun

Haven't read either of these two before...but couldn't resist them
Unfortunately they had none of the Victoria Holt novels that I remember were so much a part of my teenage years. What books were you reading in your teens and do their covers pull you into a time warp?

  1. Oh, I love church fetes and always head straight for the book stall too (and then to the cakes )! You have some real finds there - I used to love Ian Fleming's books. Also Madeleine Brent, Victoria Holt and M M Kaye. I wouldn't need to buy them though, since I still have my original copies (yep, like Biddy, I'm a hoarder), but I'm always on the lookout for other gems. Great post, Liz!

  2. I am jealous that you still have yours...when I moved to the UK my mother took the opportunity of clearing out...they all went!

  3. Aaargh, don't you just hate when that happens? My mum threw away some gorgeous 50's clothes - didn't realise I might want them!

  4. My sister stopped my parents throwing out some Penguin classics including 'Catcher in the Rye'. Bad parents!

  5. Christine...it's so frustrating but I'll probably do the same to my kids!

Biddy - thank goodness your sister saved them!

  6. Tryst, by Elswyth Thane. The cover of my 1960s paperback -- with its 35 cents price printed on the cover -- takes me right back to my youth.
