Launch of 'A Cornish Stranger'

Organising a launch party for your book is not easy and can be nerve-racking for the author, but attending someone else’s is pure fun!  And there’s no one better at hosting unusual and interesting launch parties than our very own Liz Fenwick.

On Thursday, Liz’s latest book, A CornishStranger, was released into the world, and it was given a party with real style.  We were served Pimm’s (a very British summer drink), nibbles and Cornish clotted cream ice cream in various flavours, which was truly delicious.  Then we were treated to some live opera singing, courtesy of a very talented young lady, and a reading from the book which drew you in, making you want to start on it immediately!

Now all I need is some free time in which to tackle my TBR pile …

Liz with fellow Heroine Addict Julie Cohen
Many thanks to Liz for a very enjoyable evening and I wish her and A Cornish Stranger huge success!

A Cornish Stranger:-

There’s an old Cornish saying: “Save a stranger from the sea, he’ll turn your enemy …”

When her reclusive grandmother becomes too frail to live alone, Gabriella Blythe moves into the remote waterside cabin on Frenchman’s Creek which has been her grandmother’s home for decades.  Once a celebrated artist, Jaunty’s days are coming to a close, but she is still haunted by events in her past, particularly the sinking of the Lancasteria during the war.

Everything is fine until a handsome stranger arrives in a storm, seeking help.  Fin has been left a family legacy: a delicate watercolour of a cabin above the creek which leads him to this beautiful stretch of Cornish water.  As Fin begins to pick at the clues of the painting, he is drawn into the lives of Gabe and Jaunty, unravelling a remarkable story of identity and betrayal …

Forbidden Kisses... (and a giveaway)

Wet Kisses...

As you will remember way back in November we had a party to celebrate the first of my short stories, ‘The Last Kiss’. That was the first of ‘The Kiss Collection’. December saw the publication of ‘The First Kiss’ and today is the turn of my third kiss-themed short story, ‘Lipstick on His Collar’.

This one explores what happens when you kiss someone you shouldn’t… not that any of ‘The Heroine Addicts’ have ever done that. Or, of course, any of you… *coughs*

But it can happen. Hormones and attraction can over take you and before you know it you are in a situation you could've sworn you would never be in.

So as not to embarrass anyone here, I'm not asking you to share those forbidden kisses. Instead I am asking you to share any memorable kisses you have had. Good or bad.  First, last, forever. The best entry will win signed copies of the lovely Liz Fenwick’s books, ‘The Cornish House’ and A Cornish Affair’ PLUS (hold on to your hats) copies of each of my Kiss stories.

How can you resist?

Please share your stories in the comments, the Heroine Addicts will contribute too. Liz and I will confer (over a glass or two of wine) to decide the winner.

Come on. Don’t be shy, it isn’t like you’ve kissed someone you shouldn’t?

You can download 'Lipstick on His Collar' here or any of the other Kisses here

The Festival of Romance and Our Award Winner!

I’ve just come back from this year’s Festival of Romance, held in the centre of Bedford at various venues (all thankfully within walking distance of each other) and it’s been a great weekend – mostly because our own Liz Fenwick won the Reader Award for Best Romantic Read with her novel A Cornish Affair!  It was extra exciting because I got to read out the result and present her with the award, which felt very special :-)  So huge congratulations to Liz from all of us!

Liz and Christina at the Romance Fair
I should really start at the beginning though - here in the UK we are not spoilt for choice when it comes to romance festivals and/or conventions, like authors are in the US for example.  Here, the FoR is it.  Literally.  So as an avid romance/romantic fiction fan, as well as an author, I was very keen to be there and support it – any event that celebrates romance sounds great to me!  And it was huge fun – a varied programme of events, talks, workshops and, of course, the awards ball.

The festival kicked off on Friday night with an Art and Romance Evening at the newly opened Higgins Museum, where attendees were given a quick tour before the serious business of author readings began.  There were some fascinating pieces of furniture – both Georgian/Regency and Arts & Crafts painted pieces – all of which I would have loved to own!  The readings were by authors of historical novels and I was one of them.  We’d come dressed in period costume and my outfit was that of an ordinary woman of the 1640s.  Not very easy to wear while reading anything out loud, I have to say, as the bodice was kind of tight!

Liz and the other shortlistees in her category
Saturday was super busy, with a Romance Fair running all day where we set up stalls to sell our books and various other bits and pieces.  Several talks and author panels, plus readings from authors, went on during the day, and some of us were also running workshops.

The finale was the awards ball though, where the winners and runners-up were cheered on by an enthusiastic audience.  And this was when our Liz triumphed – woohoo!

I do hope the Festival of Romance can keep going as we need more romance/romantic fiction events in the UK and I’m already looking forward to next year’s!

A Big Week for the Heroine Addicts... celebrating birthdays and books

Sometimes you wonder just how much you can cram into a week...well this week three heroine addicts have/had birthdays Anna, Julie and moi (and for one of them it was a big one ending 0). And as if that wasn't enough...Julie has a new book out today...Dear Thing
You can find it here

Claire and Ben are the perfect couple. But behind the glossy façade, they've been desperately trying - and failing - to have a baby for years. Now, the stress and feelings of loss are taking their toll on their marriage. Claire's ready to give up hope and get on with her life, but Ben is not. And then Ben's best friend, Romily, offers to conceive via artificial insemination and carry the baby for them.
Romily acts in good faith, believing it will be easy to be a surrogate. She's already a single mother, and has no desire for any more children. Except that being pregnant with Ben's child stirs up all sorts of emotions in her, including one she's kept hidden for a very long time: Ben's the only man she's ever loved.
Two mothers-and one baby who belongs to both of them, and which only one of them can keep.

And the small paperback of The Cornish House is out

You can find it here

Can a house heal a broken heart?

When artist Maddie inherits a house in Cornwall shortly after the death of her husband, she hopes it will be the fresh start she and her step-daughter desperately need. Trevenen is beautiful but neglected, and as Maddie discovers the stories of generations of women who've lived there before, she begins to feel her life is somehow intertwined within its walls.

But Maddie's dream of a calm life in the countryside is far from the reality she faces - and as she pulls at the seams of Trevenen's past, the house reveals secrets that have lain hidden for generations.

So please join us for cake and champagne to celebrate a fabulous week of birthdays and books!

Launch Party - The Cornish House!

It’s party time again here on the Heroine Addicts blog and today we are celebrating the launch of Liz Fenwick’s brilliant debut novel The Cornish House!  (I have had the privilege of reading an advance copy and let me tell you, you’re in for a treat :)

As usual, we are all bringing something to eat or drink and a suitable date.  As The Cornish House is obviously set in Cornwall, our theme is anything to do with that lovely county so please let us know what and who you’ve brought when you pop in to join us!  We’ll start with Liz, of course, the guest of honour:-

Liz has brought the Flag of St Piran for us to hang on the wall (thanks, Liz!), some scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, and Hugh Jackman as her date since he apparently had something to do with inspiration for the book’s hero (can’t think why :).

I (Christina) have brought some champagne so we can toast Liz properly and I thought a charming pirate might be a suitable date, so who better than Jack Sparrow?  I’m sure he wouldn’t be above a bit of smuggling into the lovely Cornish coves and I would happily accompany him anywhere ...

Julie is bringing Paul Bettany, who Liz apparently saw in Cornwall once and failed to grab – too late, he’s Julie’s now!  She’s also found a Cornish Knocker ... no, sorry, that should be Cornish Knocker beer.  Interesting name!  Well, anyhow ...

Biddy’s escort is the fiddle-playing Seth Lakeman, and although he’s apparently from Devon, that’s near enough, isn’t it?  I’m sure he won’t mind crossing the Tamar for Biddy’s sake, especially when she’s bought some scrumpy just for him.

Susanna has arrived on the arm of Leon Ockenden (who hails from Looe, near her favourite Cornish village Polperro).  Their drink of choice is Cornish Lust – a strawberry and cream liqueur that is just magical!  [I’m beginning to think I may need to go to Cornwall more often since the choice of beverages is so ... er, exotic!]

Finally, Anna is joining us with the lovely Matthew McConaughey in tow – he looks like he’s just rushed out of the sea to be with her, what a hero!  And she’s invited the fantastic girls of Kemysk to entertain us with their dancing (perhaps Seth will play for us too?)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNxG6i0hcKc).

So now the party is in full swing – please join us to help celebrate Liz’s launch!

Before we have too much of those wonderfully named drinks, we’ve asked Liz to give us five facts about The Cornish House:-

Which is your favourite scene in the book?  Such a tough question but I would have to say the last scene in the book.

Which scene made you smile?  Almost every scene with Hannah in it …her attitude just makes me smile but in particular her first meeting with Old Tom ...

Which character surprised you the most?  I would have to say Old Tom as I didn’t know he would be in the book until he appeared and I fell in love with him …

Which was the scene you hated writing the most?  That would give the plot away but let’s just say the one where Maddie feels the most pain …

Which book would your hero probably have on his shelf?  Ah, Mark’s bookshelves would be laden with glorious glossy architecture books but the well-worn copy of The Hobbit would say a lot more about him …

You can find The Cornish House here and in all good book stores!

Now, let’s party on dudes …
